This paper attempts to prove the viability of using an unmanned 6-motors rotorcraft (U6R), commonly known as hexacopter, as a measurement instrument of wind field (wind velocity, rate of change of wind velocity and wind gradient). A 3D-sonic anemometer and a datalogger, were fixed on a vertical cable installed in the U6R for wind collection following specific flight patterns. The primary motivation is the assessment of the wind power potential, particularly on aquatic systems; the secondary goal is development of a low-cost atmospheric measurement and sampling system. Results coming from vertical wind profile are compared to measurement data obtained from 5 anemometers mounted along on a 50-m met mast.
